 Sentence structure

In a sentence we have a set of words which each has a specific function and name
To form a correct sentence we start with
Subject      +     Verb      +       Compliment      +       Modifier
Carol learns Italian in an institute --- S + V + C + M
Tiffany is English --- S +V +C
Josh works --- S+V
1)   Subject :

a)       A subject can be either a noun or a noun phrase
Example :
Tiffany is a student --- “Tiffany” here is a noun
The blue car is mine ---- “The blue car” is a noun phrase as it is consisted of a group of words
It can be a subject of an impersonal verb (meaning has no personal preference)
Example:
          It snowed last week
There can act as subject but it’s an unreal subject. The real subject can be found after the verb and the verb can be plural or singular depending on the real subject that comes after it
        Example:
There were many people running from the fire --- many people plural so we put were
There was a cat on the tree --- cat singular subject so we put was
2)   Verb:

After every subject we find a subject. The verb might be a single word or a phrase as in auxiliary plus a verb

Sara speaks Chinese
Sara is reading a book
Sara has traveled to Britain twice

3)   Compliment :
A compliment completes the meaning of the verb; however it is not necessary in a sentence.
Example:
They left the house.
They left.
A compliment answers the questions: “Whom?” And “What? “
They ate an apple pie --- What did they eat?
She visited her friends --- Whom did she visit?

4)   Modifier:
A modifier tells us about the time “when?”, the place “Where” or the manner “How?”.
She studied English yesterday ---When did she study?
They lived in Paris ---Where did they live?
She talks Spanish beautifully --- how does she speak Spanish?
